We are thrilled to announce the launch of the North West Employers Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) Regional Charter, a pioneering initiative aimed at fostering an environment of inclusivity and equality across our region. This charter represents our collective commitment to creating workplaces and communities where everyone is valued, respected, and provided with equal opportunities to thrive.

The EDI Regional Charter is designed to serve as a framework for local authorities, public organisations and businesses to actively promote diversity and inclusion within their respective spheres. By signing the charter, participants pledge to uphold principles of equality, diversity, and inclusion in all aspects of their operations, policies, and practices whilst also evidencing the great work they are doing in the creation of focused initiatives to further the effort towards increased equity.

Promote Awareness and Understanding: Increase awareness and understanding of diversity and inclusion issues within our region through education, training, and engagement initiatives.

Foster Inclusive Workplaces: Create inclusive workplaces where individuals from diverse backgrounds feel valued, respected, and supported to contribute their full potential.

Advance Equal Opportunities: Champion equal opportunities for all, regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, disability, age, religion, or any other characteristic.

Combat Discrimination: Take proactive measures to identify and address discrimination, bias, and harassment in all forms, ensuring a safe and welcoming environment for everyone.

Measure Progress: Leverage the mechanisms outlined in the charter to monitor and evaluate progress towards EDI goals, with a commitment to continuous improvement and accountability.

We invite all organisations, institutions, and individuals within our region to join us in supporting the EDI Regional Charter. By signing the charter, you pledge your commitment to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in your workplace, community, and beyond.

We’ve also developed a template for councillor development conversations that you can adapt; details of which can also be found below.

North West Employers Diagnostic Tool

As part of the North West Employers stage one process, colleagues from the team will meet with the leader (or deputy), the chief executive/ chief officer, head of HR/ HR officer, head of OD/ OD officer and officers responsible for EDI.

North West Employers will follow the process outlined to the right (and in more detail within the charter) to review your organisation’s current standing and make recommendations for being awarded the charter.

Once the organisation is deemed as successful, they will receive EDI chartership for four years, after which organisations can submit evidence to demonstrate how they have sustained and further developed their commitment to EDI.

Stage One Process

Real World Group Diagnostic Survey

To compliment this charter there is also the option of a diagnostic survey supported by Real World Group which is designed to ask organisation a wide range of questions relating to areas such as consulting with others, appreciating individuals, being open and consistent, creating psychological safety etc. This survey can be customised to each organisation.

Academy of Leadership & Management

North West Employers, through our extensive pool of specialist associates, are able to offer in addition to the charter best practice and diagnostic survey, bespoke support in the form of focused EDI training sessions that can be delivered both in person and virtually.

Do I have to use the diagnostic survey provided by the Real World Group with the one provided with the charter?

No, you do not have to use both tools at the same time you may opt to do the Real World Group’s diagnostic survey first to set the scene then review and incorporate the charter’s tool later or vice versa.

Academy of Leadership & Management Qualifications

As part of designing the charter, we wanted to offer a number of resources to support organisations with their endeavours towards equity. This led us to discuss and be able to offer, through the academy Level 3, 5 and 7 EDI qualifications that can support individuals in either raising their awareness across EDI, helping managers to support individuals with protected characteristics and also to support those at a senior leadership level to develop their EDI strategy
