The relationship between councillors and the communities they serve has always been at the heart of what being a councillor is all about. The face to face contact when constituents can share problems and concerns is vital to making that relationship work. Councillors have been left to make their own arrangements in the past when out in their places but now, as highlighted in the press, that is no longer acceptable and every council should be discussing with its councillors how they can be assisted to carry out this role safely and effectively.
- Raise awareness of the social environment councillors operate in and the changing relationship between elected members and the public they serve
- Raise awareness of the circumstances Councillors find themselves in which lead to vulnerability
- Consider the precautions we can take to ensure personal safety (with an emphasis on lone working)
